The Best Day

The Best Day
Woke at seven fifty five, black coffee helps me to revive
I make my way up the A39
The traffic's unusually slow, my mood is unaffected though
Because I given myself ample time
A ticket comes from the machine, no human interaction seen
7.50 seemed like good value
There's no need to stand in line, sit myself down in row C9
And start enjoying Deadpool on screen 2
Could this be the best day of my life?
(At the) very least it's up in my top five
Impulsive, I become awestruck, a tendency to get swept up
Within the moment, much more than I should
You know how I operate, I'm prone to exaggerate
But I can substantiate: this day's been pretty good
It wasn't long we had to wait, the sound check sounded really great
Musicians filled the room and all engaged
The line-up was extremely strong, the first band finished their last song
And then we made our way onto the stage
With nerves largely under control, we played like it was Rock'n'Roll
A feeling like no other could convey
With gratitude from everyone, the last note played, our work was done
Unplugged and put our guitars away
Could this be the best day of my life?
(At the) very least it's up in my top five
Impulsive, I become awestruck, a tendency to get swept up
Within the moment, much more than I should
You know how I operate, I'm prone to exaggerate
But I can substantiate: this day's been pretty good
Music played on through the night, atmosphere and sounds excite
But would I make it to the last encore
A kindly soul bought me a drink, before I'd had much time to think
Pints consumed, numbered up to four
Surprisingly, when I checked, it had a fairly strong effect
I hadn't eaten anything for tea
Back home sandwich might be nice, then someone offered me advice
“Why don’t you go and get a KFC?”
Could this be the best day of my life?
(At the) very least it's up in my top five
Impulsive, I become awestruck, a tendency to get swept up
Within the moment, much more than I should
You know how I operate, I'm prone to exaggerate
But I can substantiate: this day's been pretty good

So What
04:43
|
|||
So What
I watch the rolling newsfeed as it rolls right out of sight
I do my best to research everything, and often tune in to Newsnight, quite late at night
I try my best to memorize the key facts that I'm told
I think I’m conscientious, but like soap it's so difficult to hold, am I too old
Logic's said all his goodbyes, and reason's got his coat
Tried to change the channel but I can't find the remote
So what? Maybe it's the end of the world
It’s like our Universe has become unfurled
We’re so tired. Predictions never ever came true
You know it’s time to admit, it's long overdue
So what? Maybe it's the end of the world
Reality is mixing with the Coen Brother's dreams
(while) Wotsit coloured politicians infiltrate our television screens,
that’s how it seems
Hooked up super-fast we still get pushed into the dark
(Like) Scooby Doo it's obvious, must be the guy from the amusement park, no question mark
Logic's said all his goodbyes, and reason's got his coat
Tried to change the channel but I can't find the remote
So what? Maybe it's the end of the world
It’s like our Universe has become unfurled
We’re so tired. Predictions never ever came true
You know it’s time to admit, it's long overdue
So what? Maybe it's the end of the world
I keep up with events whenever opportune
Didn't realise I was watching a cartoon
My sense of outrage, is left hanging by a thread
I wake up, and look around, then I decide to go, straight back to bed
So what?
Maybe it's the end of the world
Maybe it's the end of the world
Oh!

30 Seconds
Did you say something? I wasn't concentrating
Let me explain, before you start berating me
I have to admit that you fell from my view
It's just my phone's more interesting than you
I'll go to YouTube, get all I need to know
Exponential growth, my confidence will grow
Got 30 seconds, it's all I can afford
Objective judgement takes that long, I don't want to get bored
I'm down to six percent, I need to charge my phone
One plugged in to the wall, I'll use it as my own
Maintain communication, I don’t want to be rude
I’ll keep my phone in one hand, whilst eating all my food
Did you say something? I wasn't concentrating
Let me explain, before you start berating me
I have to admit that you fell from my view
It's just my phone's more interesting than you
Heard a Buzz, a distraction
Instantaneous reaction
Could it be a message coming through?
It's plain for everyone to see
Increased popularity
There's another message
And another message
And another message coming through
Headphones do not have to mean, that I'm ignoring you
That's just a coincidence, which happens to be true
You’d think the television, would satisfy my need
I’ll watch it with my right eye, whilst checking my newsfeed
Capture every single thing I say and see and do
Not sure I'll ever get the time for a full review
Companionship is constant, I’ll never be alone
Reception’s not that good, so I don’t use it as a phone
Did you say something? I wasn't concentrating
Let me explain, before you start berating me
I have to admit that you fell from my view
It's just my phone's more interesting than you
It's just my phone's more interesting than you
It's just my phone's more interesting
Than you…
Did you say something???

Not Getting Any Younger

Not Getting Any Younger
I lean in closer to get near
I'm really struggling to hear
Your mouth it moves that much is clear
I'll take an educated guess to know what you're talking about
Text on my phone is very small
Can barely read the words at all
Optician smiles and then she, checks my date of birth and says:
It's time, that you, faced up to the truth… She said that:
I'm not getting any younger
(My) moving parts have all seen better days
She said is it any wonder
It's to be expected at my age
But I, still feel, OK
Checked in the mirror twice today
When did that old guy come to stay
He looks just slightly worn away
He seems to get on with my, kids and wife almost as well as me
My shoulder makes a clicking sound
My thumbs aches when it moves around
The Doctor checks his screen and, raises one eyebrow and says:
It's time, that you, faced up to the truth… He said that:
I'm not getting any younger
(My) moving parts have all seen better days
He said is it any wonder
It's to be expected at my age
But I, still feel, just like I used to feel
I tell, myself, it's really not that big a deal
And time, is just, an abstract concept that was made up a long time ago
I know
So I won't let it hold me back
There’s no anxiety attack
I think I just heard my knees crack
I'll just keep going and ignore the things they said... They said that:
I'm not getting any younger
(My) moving parts have all seen better days
They say is it any wonder
It's to be expected at my age
But I, still feel, OK

That Guy

|

That Guy
Everyone knows, how the story goes
In some bar there sits a cowboy
Has a laugh with everyone, the epitome of fun
He'd buy you a drink, or so you might think
From the radio, comes his favourite show
It's a song he recognises
He orders one more shot, contemplates all that he's got
And wonders why, he's seen as 'that guy'
Just maybe, you don't see my sensitive side
Just maybe, you've not seen the films where I cried
Just maybe, I'll stay at home once in a while
Just maybe, I'm hiding, behind my smile
Don't ask me why, you're reluctant to try
But maybe I'm just not 'that guy'
So is it that, I might wear a hat
And listen to Brad Paisley
Just because my shirt is check, doesn't mean I'm a redneck
(You) misunderstand, I've been dealt this hand
Places I've been, all the things I've seen
But I've never been to Texas
Plan to visit there one day, even though it's a cliché
To fortify, I'm seen as 'that guy'
Just maybe, you don't see my sensitive side
Just maybe, you've not seen the films where I cried
Just maybe, I'll order a soda and lime
Just maybe, eat salad from time to time
Just maybe, I'll buy a plain shirt and brown shoes
Just maybe, start listening to rhythm and blues
Just maybe, I'll stay at home once in a while
Just maybe, I'm hiding, behind my smile
Don't ask me why, you're reluctant to try
But maybe I'm just not 'that guy'
You could ask why, but you won't dignify
Cause maybe I'm just not 'that guy'

Like Magnets
You're sociable and friendly, not how you'd describe me
I'll have drink, you’d take sobriety
You’re not a fan of Star Wars, you rather watch The Voice
It's really not that difficult a choice
People raise with regularity
A relationship with such disparity
Maybe we've got reverse polarity?
Like Magnets, we're never coming apart
Like Magnets, it's more science than art
Some complicated puzzle that's found its missing part
A line of intersection through my heart
You prefer clean shaven, I've often got a beard
Your friends are nice, and mine often seem weird
I like to go to parties, you'd rather stay at home
It's my X verses your Y chromosome
People raise with regularity
A relationship with such disparity
Maybe we've got reverse polarity?
Like Magnets, we're never coming apart
Like Magnets, it's more science than art
Some complicated puzzle that's found its missing part
A line of intersection through my heart
You like get up early, I prefer to stay in bed
You play an opera, I'd play Motörhead
Our differences are numerous, and plain for all to see
I don't care, it doesn't bother me
I'm sure there is a law in physics so it must be true
When something happens there's another thing that happens too
The laws of affinity too complex to define
Your electrically charged particles spinning around mine
Like Magnets, we're never coming apart
Like Magnets, it's more science than art
Some complicated puzzle that's found its missing part
A line of intersection through my heart

Lucky Me

Lucky Me
"I don't believe in fate" you said
"There's nothing predetermined, I think that's all in your head"
You're not trying to tell me; it's destiny
I know it might sound strange
And I don't disagree, it's not you mind I'm trying to change
It's just the trend I've noticed when it seems I've got, nowhere to go - This I know
Then some happy accident takes place
Lack of opportunity replaced by something new
An unseen avenue
Lucky, lucky, lucky me
Defy the gods of probability
My life's one long game of Monopoly
Lucky me. Lucky me
"Well I'm not buying it", you say
"Next you tell me fate has always had a part to play"
Then you look at me with a hint of mild dismay. What can I say?
Whenever things seem to become
So hopeless with no possibility to escape from
Almost embarrassing with such high levels of, consistency - You wait and see
Then some happy accident takes place
Lack of opportunity replaced by something new
An unseen avenue
Lucky, lucky, lucky me
Defy the gods of probability
My life's one long game of Monopoly
Lucky me
Lucky, lucky, lucky me
Goods returned without a guarantee
A gambling man reluctantly agrees
Lucky me
Lucky me
I’m not trying to convince you, I wouldn’t be that bold
Ask the question “Is it luck or, chance that’s taken hold?”
Maybe preparation just met, opportunity
Don’t try to over analyse it, lucky, lucky me.

Just One More
03:14
|

Just One More
I haven't seen you for a while, let's go out for a drink
Meet down the pub, late afternoon, before there's time to think
Pint number one has been consumed, with minimum of fuss
I'll keep an eye on my phone, so I don't miss the bus
Pint number two gets ordered, I lean back in my seat
It's gone down quite nicely, I'm relaxed and upbeat
Just a quiet drink you said, I'll probably slip away
I make my way to leave, when you turn around and say
Just one more? A minor hesitation, then I turn back from the door
Just one more? What harm could it do, it's not like we've been keeping score
Maybe we've got time for just one more
Pint number three is slipping down, I start to talk with ease
Opinions stated strongly, no one disagrees
I get slightly distracted in the middle of your story
I have to interrupt, because I need the lavatory
I come back from the toilet, pint four is on display
Completely unconvincing with my showing of dismay
I should have gone home by now, maybe I should text
I place my finished pint down, I know what's coming next
Just one more? As if there were any chance, I'm staring at the door
Just one more? What harm could it do, it's not like we've been keeping score
Maybe we've got time for just one more
This was never my intention
You ask why there’s no prevention
Just being sociable
Got time for just one more
I'm feeling very confident, as I consume pint five
Not sure that I can feel my legs, it's great to be alive
The people near me move away, surely I'm not that loud
You make your way back from the bar, squeezing through the crowd
Pint number six, I'm slowing down, my speech moves to a slur
I'm working hard to concentrate, everything's a blur
I'm sure that it was daylight, when the first pint went down
Sprightly you jump up and say: "Time for one last round?"
Just one more? Even if I tried I couldn't focus on the door
Just one more? What harm could it do, it's not like we've been keeping score
I think if I try to get up, I'll fall down on the floor
So maybe I should stick around, and have...Just one more

Another Boring Song

Another Boring Song
I need to spend some time alone, but I can't concentrate
An idea from somebody else that I could emulate
Maybe it's my technique, but my woodshed's falling down
We can't become more clichéd or they'll chase us out of town
It's just Another Boring Song
The melody's well hidden, and the lyrics aren't that strong
It's just Another Boring Song
It'll only be 3 minutes, until another comes along (comes along)
The pressure's on to replicate, the latest greatest hit
To balance all the lyrics with some poignancy and wit
I need some more black coffee, I'm spending too much time
Finding the right word that has 3 syllables and rhymes
It's just Another Boring Song
The melody's well hidden, and the lyrics aren't that strong
It's just Another Boring Song
It'll only be 2 minutes, until another comes along (comes along)
People making comments, like threadbare and stale,
Mediocre, old hat, and lame
We're just developing our personality
That's what have to blame, so all songs sound the same
I'll test it at an open mic, to see what people think
I'll take the edge off how it goes, by having a large drink
But I forgot one of the lines, from the second verse
Then played a minor 7th chord, I wished that we'd rehearsed
It's just Another Boring Song
The melody's well hidden, and the lyrics aren't that strong
It's just Another Boring Song
It'll only be 1 minute, until another comes along (comes along)

Maximes

Maximes
I plucked up the courage
Maybe it was fate
I asked my friend, to ask your friend,
To ask you on a date
Nervously I waited
The chain was incomplete
Never anticipated
You said that you would go
The world around me slowed
I was too young to know
We thought we'd seen it all
Our tellies were quite small
And then we sat in awe beholding widescreen
The queues right down the street
Carpet stuck to our feet
Our lives felt near complete and so did our dreams
Now a distant memory, or so it seems
In the place they used to call
Maximes
Sitting in the darkness
Considering my move
I stretched my arm out on your coat
Attempting to be smooth
Exactly at that moment
The tourch light cut right through
Exposing my ineptitude
(I) quickly pulled away
My indiscreet display
But you said "It's OK"
We thought we'd seen it all
Our tellies were quite small
And then we sat in awe beholding widescreen
The queues right down the street
Carpet stuck to our feet
Our lives felt near complete and so did our dreams
Now a distant memory, or so it seems
In the place they used to call
Maximes
Walked you home that evening
Stood outside your door
Just considered leaving when
I felt my knees go weak
You kissed me on the cheek
And said "See you next week"
We thought we'd seen it all
Our tellies were quite small
And then we sat in awe beholding widescreen
The queues right down the street
Carpet stuck to our feet
Our lives felt near complete and so did our dreams
Now a distant memory, or so it seems
In the place they used to call
Maximes

Strive for independence? Not old enough to drive?
Smalltown doesn't have the same appeal
You've cycled out to Ashcott, that's just not the same
You need to procure an automobile
Parents appear miffed, won't offer you a lift
And credibility would take a blow
Your wages can afford, the latest pop record
There's another way that you should know
Take the 376 - 376 – 376
When you're living in the sticks
No car based politics
A never ending journey, feels just like a dream
Your Casio, says 2 hours have passed
You've stopped at every Village, every far flung outpost
We're not there yet so this is not the last
The pain is nullified, you're unaffected by
The moderate nature of your pace
Took Two months to perfect, your D90 cassette
That Sony Walkman's sounding pretty ace
Take the 376 - 376 – 376
When you're living in the sticks
It's where I get my kicks
Go from Street (in Smithfield Road), pass through Glastonbury
Get to Wells Bus Station, that's via Coxley
Traffic lights at Green Ore, Chewton Mendip next
A39 to A37, that road intersects
Temple Cloud to Clutton, all the way to Pensford Hill
Cross A4174, go past the home of Phil
Roundabout near Temple Meads, by the railway station
Alight when we're in Bristol, that's our final destination
That would be one, hell of a journey, but we've missed out...
Farrington Gurney
You've dined out on a Wimpy, large milk shake and fries
And you've made, purchases unplanned
A new sound that beguiled you, last night on The Tube
On red vinyl by an unknown band
Make your way En Masse, through the underpass
To Boney Maroney's where it's at
You might be awestruck, be sure to buckle up
Prepare yourself for the long journey back...
Take the 376 - 376 – 376
When you're living in the sticks
My independence picks
The 376 - 376 – 376
Might even meet some chicks
Or occasional lunatics
It's better than Netflix
It's where I get my kicks

Big Red

Big Red
Far into the distance, way down a dusty track
Walking with a purpose, a guitar on his back
His shadow like a blanket, as he looked me in the eyes
The biggest man I'd ever seen, almost three times my size
He took the guitar from his back, and played that thing real good
He wasn't to be messed with, let that be understood
Out came the finest music, with nothing left unsaid
I asked him what name was… he said I'm called Big Red
Some men run, and some men hide, and some fill with and fear and dread
He sure is mean, but he plays so clean. He’s the one they call Big Red
I'll impart my secret, he said with some insistence
Everything you'll ever need, if you show no resistance
I'm here to make a deal with you, what I give's not for free
I'm happy to accommodate, for a nominal feel
It didn’t take me too much time, to come a decision
It’s rare to see a fretboard, played with such precision
I’d agreed to pay the price, where others may have fled
I signed on the dotted line, and he just signed Big Red
Some men run, and some men hide, and some fill with and fear and dread
He sure is mean, but he plays so clean. He’s the one they call Big Red
Terms, conditions all agreed, transaction was complete
I thanked him for all that he'd done, and bid a swift retreat
Before I left, he stopped me dead, the wisdom he'd imparted
He said: You playing country boy? I said that we'd just started - Go!
Some men run, and some men hide, and some fill with and fear and dread
He sure is mean, but he plays so clean. He’s the one they call Big Red

Just Like Jupiter
Broke out on Sunday harbour bound, rode the red wave through the night
Said Hello to St Malo, with morning’s first light
At blistering pace hit town by noon, much to our surprise
So steed and rider took the chance for comfort overnight
The sense of trepidation
As we left the station
Early the next day
Became a living hell
As we reached La Rochelle
Wind and rain driving in my face
Riding over mountains and milestones
Watching the scenery burn
Think of me just like Jupiter
I’ll see you when I return
The rain stopped and the sun broke through, as we cruised down the Garonne
Found ourselves in good company, on the place de revolution
One long night in the room of kings, set us up for the race
Late afternoon the plains gave way, to a more familiar place
Grounded by temptation
A maverick’s vacation
We stayed the summer through
The streets, the bridge the Capitole
We ended up with nothing left, Toulouse
Riding over mountains and milestones
Watching the scenery burn
Think of me just like Jupiter
I’ll see you when I return
October came the days had cooled, thoughts turned to one last push
To reach the coast at Bilbao before it got to dusk
Chased the shadow of the Pyrenees, all the way to the borderline
On to the city of the artisan, speaking words I couldn’t recognise
Perpetual emotion
As we set off across the ocean
With just a dollar for the night
With Jupiter at rest
Alone with the sunset
Searching for fins until last light
Riding over mountains and milestones
Watching the scenery burn
Think of me just like Jupiter
I’ll see you when I return
